European Standard for Children's Mattresses for Cots and Cribs has been Amended

2021-10-08

This European Standard, EN 16890:2017+A1:2021, as amended on 2021-06-30, is titled "Children's furniture - Mattresses for cots and cribs - Safety requirements and test methods". It specifies safety requirements and test methods for mattresses including mattress bases and mattress toppers, used in children's cots, travel cots, cribs and suspended baby beds, for domestic and non-domestic use.  This European Standard does not apply to mattresses for carry cots and pram bodies, inflatable mattresses, water mattresses and mattresses used for medical purposes.

This amended version of EN 16890 is expected to be cited in the General Product Safety Directive (2001/95/EC) shortly.

Major Changes:

This amendment (A1:2021) updates and corrects some provisions of the standard EN 16890:2017.  The changes, amongst others, are listed as follows:

  1. EN 71-3: 2019 is now used as reference for determining a "chemical hazard".

  1. The method to check nominal dimensions is amended. The tolerance on width and length is now +25/-0 mm, and the thickness shall also be indicated.

  1. Verification is required to ensure the thickness of the mattress does not exceed the nominal value.

  1. Decorative stitches and quilting are now explicitly excluded from strength and slippage requirements, and information should be given on the wording "other fabrics to be tested”.

  1. Length or perimeter of cords and loops are regulated, to prevent strangulation hazards.

  1. Additional information is needed to ensure the durability test is conducted.

Effective Date:

Any European national standards conflicting with this EN have to be withdrawn by 2021-12-31 at the latest.
